Progressing Workplace Gender Equality Initiatives

Course Overview:

In this course participants will gain an understanding of how gender equality can be most effectively progressed in public sector organisations. The course will provide participants with practical information on how to develop, implement and evaluate a gender equality plan for their organisation. Participants will leave with ideas and evidence on how to improve their organisation’s gender equality plans, which will also be transferable to other diversity and inclusion plans.

Participants will be required to engage in advance preparation for their course, to ensure they receive maximum benefit.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for public sector human resource professionals, both those new to their role and those who are more experienced who work in the area of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Course Outline:


  • Two weeks prior to the course, participants will be emailed academic articles to read in preparation of the course



  • Introductions
  • Dr Williamson will provide an overview on what constitutes organisational gender equality, and factors to achieve equality.
  • Interactive workshop where participants will discuss the articles and consider how gender equality can be most successfully implemented and progressed in organisations.


  • Dr Williamson will provide an overview on how gender mainstreaming can be used to progress workplace gender equality.
  • Interactive workshop where participants will examine organisational gender equality policies.
  • Conclusions

About the Presenter:

Dr Sue Williamson

Dr Sue Williamson is a Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management at UNSW, Canberra. Sue specialises in two main areas of research – gender equality in the workplace, and public sector human resources and industrial relations. Sue has combined these two areas and for the past few years has been examining how various public sector agencies implement gender equality initiatives. Sue is currently focusing on the role of middle managers in progressing gender equality, and how organisations can become more gender equitable.
